Design an Ankle Foot Orthosis
There are many ways to solve a problem. Sometimes solving a problem is simple and fast, and other times it is complex and takes years to develop a solution. For engineers, it is helpful to use a specific set of steps to find the best solution to a problem.

prototype - A working model used to test a design concept by making observations and necessary adjustments.
cerebral palsy (CP) - A condition that affects body movement and coordination. It is caused by brain injury or brain malformation that occurs before, during, or immediately after birth when an infant’s brain is still developing. |

**A Note on Sensitivity and Respect toward people that are different from us.
Using People First Language
People First Language is a way to reference a disability without labeling or defining a person with the disability. While a disability is a medical diagnosis, it doesn’t identify who a person is. People First Language emphasizes referring to the person before the disability or diagnosis. For example, instead of referring to a “handicapped student,” you would reference a “student with a disability.” Be aware, be compassionate, be respectful of others, regardless of their appearance or abilities. 4. Design, build, and test an AFO prototype that meets the following design requirements.
5. Present your team’s process and model to the class. Make sure to address these questions in your presentation:
- How did you develop your idea (initial conversations and brainstorms)?
- What struggles did you have?
- What changes did you make to improve your design?
- Why do you think your design will satisfy the patient’s needs?
6. Working in a shared Google Doc, REFLECT on your team’s collaboration in the instant design challenge and define rules for working effectively as a team.
Reflect on the following:
- What behaviors positively impacted your team’s effectiveness in designing your team’s solution?
- What behaviors negatively impacted your team’s effectiveness in designing your team’s solution?
- How can any negative behaviors be improved next time?
- We will listen to each other and not interrupt one another.
- We will value the contributions of each team member.
- Each member of the team will be responsible for …
